AN OFDM platform for wireless systems testing: alamouti 2x1 MIMO example

In this paper, we present a real-time implementation of an OFDM hardware platform. The platform is based on HW blocks that can be put together to configure a wireless system based on OFDM modulation. The platform can be easily upgraded to test pre-coding cooperation algorithms. We evaluate the platform to implement a diversity Alamouti 2×1 MIMO scheme wireless system. The testbed is implemented using Field- Programmable Gate Array (FPGAs) through Xilinx System Generator for DSP. Blocks for time-domain synchronization and channel estimation are key components necessary in transmission system that require good time synchronization and channel estimation for efficient demodulation

It's about THYME: On the design and implementation of a time-aware reactive storage system for pervasive edge computing environments

Much of that data has localized and ephemeral interest, but can be of great use if shared among co-located devices. However, mobile devices often experience poor connectivity, leading to availability issues if application storage and logic are fully delegated to a remote cloud infrastructure. In turn, the edge computing paradigm pushes computations and storage beyond the data center, closer to end-user devices where data is generated and consumed, enabling the execution of certain components of edge-enabled systems directly and cooperatively on edge devices. In this article, we address the challenge of supporting reliable and efficient data storage and dissemination among co-located wireless mobile devices without resorting to centralized services or network infrastructures. We propose THYME, a novel time-aware reactive data storage system for pervasive edge computing environments, that exploits synergies between the storage substrate and the publish/subscribe paradigm. We present the design of THYME and elaborate a three-fold evaluation, through an analytical study, and both simulation and real world experimentations, characterizing the scenarios best suited for its use. The evaluation shows that THYME allows the notification and retrieval of relevant data with low overhead and latency, and also with low energy consumption, proving to be a practical solution in a variety of situations.publishersversionpublishe

Precision Muon-Related Observables as a Tool to Constrain New Physics Models

We propose a set of precision muon-related observables that serve as a tool to constrain new physics models. Using LEP's precision measurements on the $Z$-boson pole, we derive bounds on the new physics quantum contributions to the decay $Z \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. We show that the new precision observables have a real impact on two specific models that solve the $g-2$ anomaly and provide a sound dark matter candidate.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure

Major roads have a negative impact on the Tawny Owl Strix aluco and the Little Owl Athene noctua populations

The increasing road networks threaten ecosystems by direct effects such as increased mortality due to collision with vehicles and by various indirect effects leading to road avoidance. We censused Tawny Owls Strix aluco and Little Owls Athene noctua in 2005, 2007 and 2009 in a rural landscape in Southern Portugal in order to study the effects of roads and habitat characteristics on Tawny Owl density and Little Owl presence. The presence of both owl species in the 70 census locations was coherent among years. Our results showed that Tawny Owl density near major roads was lower, with the negative effects extending possibly up to 2 km. The probability of Little Owl presence was also negatively affected by the proximity to major roads. The negative effects of roads were significant even considering habitat preferences and spatial autocorrelation, which had the most marked effect on the density or presence of both owls. The reduced occupancy by Tawny Owls and Little Owls of habitats near major roads may be caused by several factors, including increased mortality, disturbance caused by high traffic density, and increased fragmentation. Traffic noise in particular may affect intra-specific communication and hunting efficiency. Consequently, habitat near roads may represent lower-quality territories for owls

Análise das adaptações no processo de pe em laboratórios de pesquisa: um estudo de caso

Desse modo, o Planejamento Estratégico entra como uma poderosa ferramenta que permite a empresa trilhar o melhor caminho a ser seguido por meio de objetivos, metas e ações estratégicas a fim de alcançar um estado futuro desejado. No caso de laboratórios de pesquisa, essa ferramenta também pode ser aplicada, porém, por se tratarem de organizações públicas, existem algumas particularidades que podem dificultar a construção da estratégia e, portanto, devem ser analisadas a fim de realizar adaptações necessárias ao processo. Para a presente pesquisa, foi analisado o processo de realização do Planejamento Estratégico (PE) do Laboratório Bridge, vinculado à Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) como fonte de informações para o estudo de caso. Desse modo, o objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar as particularidades inerentes ao processo de planejamento estratégico do Laboratório junto as adaptações e modificações que foram realizadas. Em primeiro lugar, foram descritos os conceitos necessários para o embasamento teórico da pesquisa, seguido da apresentação do Laboratório Bridge, a estrutura do planejamento estratégico utilizada, as particularidades identificadas e as adaptações e modificações dos instrumentos auxiliares utilizados durante o processo. Por fim, foi realizada uma pesquisa com alguns participantes do planejamento estratégico que indicaram que a verificação das particularidades e as adaptações nas ferramentas e métodos utilizados foram fundamentais para a construção de uma estratégia sólida e contínua para o laboratório.The intense scenario of changes makes organizations have to adjust to remain competitive in the market with attractive products and services. Thus, Strategic Planning acts as a powerful tool that allows the company to choose the best path to be followed through objectives, goals, and strategic actions to reach a desired future state. Research laboratories can use the the strategic planning technique, however, as they are public organizations, some particularities may hinder the construction of the strategy and, therefore, they must be analyzed to make the necessary adaptations. For this research, the process of carrying out the Strategic Planning (SP) of the Bridge Laboratory, linked to the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) was analyzed as a source of information for the case study. Thus, the objective of this research is to present the inherent particularities of the Laboratory's strategic planning process along with the adaptations and modifications that were made. First, the concepts necessary for the theoretical basis of the research were described, followed by the presentation of the Bridge Laboratory, the structure of the strategic planning used, the particularities identified, and the adaptations and modifications of the auxiliary instruments used during the process. Finally, a survey was conducted with some participants of Bridge’s Strategic Planning. It noticed that the particularities’ verification and the adaptation of the methods and tools in the process were decisive to build up a solid and continuous strategy in the laboratory

O Marcelismo e a Fase Final da Guerra em África (1968-1974)

O trabalho por nós desenvolvido pretende caracterizar a política de defesa praticada por Marcelo Caetano enquanto Chefe do Governo português, no período entre 1968 e 1974, através do estudo da ação governativa perante o desenvolvimento dos acontecimentos em África. Ao mesmo tempo foi nosso objetivo estudar a política de defesa do seu antecessor, Oliveira Salazar, de modo a que fosse possível construir pontos de rutura ou de continuidade entre as duas linhas de ação política praticadas por estes dois líderes políticos, em períodos diferentes, mas contíguos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido segundo o método histórico, procurando enfatizar a problemática em questão, abordando os acontecimentos de uma forma diacrónica e sincrónica, bem definidos na linha temporal de modo a que nos fosse possível desenvolver a caracterização da política de defesa de Marcello Caetano, orientada por um rigoroso e criterioso quadro conceptual. A principal conclusão deste trabalho reside na definição da política de defesa Marcelista, enquanto uma continuação, uma evolução ou uma rutura, face à política de defesa Salazarista. Com os primórdios da governação de Caetano, a serem pautados por uma aparente “abertura”, começou-se a acreditar que este traria novas políticas e novas ideias, rompendo com o que vinha a ser feito até então pelo seu antecessor. Caetano, ao mesmo tempo, deixou claro que iria considerar todo o trabalho herdado, mas não descartando a hipótese de uma certa evolução em determinadas políticas, na qual se inseria a política de defesa. Com o avançar do tempo, e com o aumento das dificuldades governativas a nível interno e a nível da guerra colonial, a incerteza instalou-se e, consequentemente, os traços de proximidade à política anteriormente conduzida por Salazar, tornaram-se evidentes. Assim sendo, a política de defesa de Caetano pode-se caracterizar como sendo uma continuidade da política de defesa de Salazar, verificando-se, no entanto, uma tentativa de evolução em certos referenciais políticos do regime. Contudo, mesmo que inicialmente, e em determinados momentos, pudesse ser associada a uma certa evolução, na prática, esse tal efeito evolutivo nunca se viria a concretizar

Obstrução nasal num recém-nascido

Dacryocystocele is an uncommon congenital disease affecting less than 1% of newborns. Herein is presented the case of a female newborn with respiratory distress with onset in the first hours of life and worsening during breastfeeding. Resistance to endoscope progression due to narrowing of both patent nasal cavities was noticed during flexible nasal endoscopy, and computed tomography revealed an extremely rare case of bilateral dacryocystocele. A conservative approach was chosen, with surveillance in the Intensive Care Unit. Although most dacryocystocele cases resolve spontaneously in the first year of life, recognition of this rare condition (particularly in Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology clinical practice) is crucial to prevent complications.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sobre derrubar portas e não esperar janelas: um estudo etnográfico sobre as relações interpessoais de uma drag queen no agreste pernambucano

A presente pesquisa buscou compreender e registar como a arte drag interfere na vida pessoal do (a) artista que a performa. O artista escolhido foi David Lucas, com sua persona drag chamada de Lady Joe. O artista é residente do interior de Pernambuco, na cidade de Caruaru. A pesquisa se dividiu em duas partes: a parte escrita e o documentário. Para isso, a pesquisa utilizou o método etnográfico para poder acompanhar o artista escolhido em sua rotina de trabalho e performance drag, registrando seu cotidiano e finalizando a pesquisa com um documentário. Ao fim da pesquisa, foi descoberto que a Lady Joe não interfere apenas na vida pessoal de David, ou seja, sua relação com família, amigos e o mundo, mas também interfere o próprio David
